The 35th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade cased the guidon of the 518th Tactical Installation and Networking Company during a deactivation ceremony held 31 August at Barton Field’s Reviewing Stand.
Col. Chris O’Connor, commander, 35th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, was the presiding officer for the event.
The 518th Signal Company was constituted on 1 October 1933 in the Army of the United States as the 1st Radio Intelligence Company and was activated on 1 November 1938 at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. It was redesignated on 7 August 1941 as the 121st Signal Radio Intelligence Company.
Having completed service in World War II, in Rhineland Eastern Europe, it was inactivated on 3 January 1946 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia. The unit was then redesignated as the 518th Signal Relay Company on 3 January 1949 and later activated on 1 April 1949 at Camp Gordon, Georgia. It was then reorganized and redesignated as the 518th Signal Company on 20 March 1953.
After its service in the Korean War, it was inactivated on 28 March 1955 in Korea. The unit was again activated on 15 December 1958 at Fort Lee, Virginia. The unit was then inactivated on 11 December 1961 in Germany and was again activated on 22 June 1962 at Fort Gordon, Georgia. The unit was then inactivated on 20 December 1971 in Vietnam after participating in numerous defensive and counter offensive operations and earning three Meritorious Unit Commendations. The unit was again activated on 4 May 1973 in Germany and was again inactivated on 15 September 1993.
“The [Tactical Installation and Networking Company] at its heart is just a good ol’ fashion cable company,” said O’Connor in his remarks. “Cable and wireman have been the bedrock of the Signal Regiment for almost 150-years, so it’s never a good day to lose a formation of tough, dedicated signal Soldiers who have always met their mission. But we can take pride looking back at their accomplishments over the past 15-years.”
As we furl the 518th’s guidon today, I think we can all be assured that should we need to expand our Army again this guidon will be unfurled once more to call together great signal Soldiers ready to meet any challenge with the utmost of their ability,” said O’Connor.
It has been a true honor to be a part of this great company’s history and lineage,” said Capt. CPT Clayton E. Mosley, commander, 518th TIN Company. “I am extremely humbled and proud for us to have been a small part of its tremendous line of success and lineage. As the saying goes ‘all good things must come to an end’.”
