As a way to improve relationships, the Ellsworth Chapel will host a free marriage enrichment event at the Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza in Rapid City, South Dakota, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 8, 2017.

The seminar, Marriage 101: Engaged and Married, is unique as it is open to all military members and their spouse or fiancé, regardless of military status.

“This event is the first of its kind,” said Staff Sgt. Brendan Sparks, a chaplain’s assistant assigned to the 28th Bomb Wing Chapel. "Through discussions we’ve had at the chapel, we’ve noticed a lot of the struggles faced by all military couples.”

The program is focused on broad topics such as communication, stressors and the Five Love Languages. The event will cover realistic scenarios such as temporary duties away from the permanent duty station and deployments, and how couples can use the skills they learned through challenging times.

“Everyone is impacted by the fast-paced mission,” Sparks said. “Especially those who are married. The whole point is to come out and learn something new and understand you’re not alone. There are other people who understand and have gone through the same things.”

Activities will include impromptu acting, round-table discussions, and keynote speakers including senior leadership from Ellsworth. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and resources will be handed out for further education.

Although the event is an alternate duty location, Airmen wishing to participate should get approval from their leadership before applying.
