Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego finished its biannual information systems technician (IT) advancement training, Aug. 25th.

The initiative, called “IT University”, was developed by Information Systems Technician First Class Patrick Andrews, and aims to increase IT Sailors’ knowledge of basic information technology operational skills prior to the upcoming Navywide Advancement Exam.

"The IT rating is extremely broad and this workshop provides attendees with a diverse snapshot of what they are expected to know,” said Andrews. “This is especially important because it allows ITs who specialize in Communications, Networks, and Communications Security, to learn about other aspects of their rating, all of which are on the exam."

Information technology plays an important role in everything from electronic mail systems to shipboard control systems and Special Intelligence systems. Navy ITs are enlisted Sailors who engage in a range of responsibilities including network administration, database management, computer hardware and software implementation and RF broadband and communications security.

"This opportunity for ITs from the San Diego waterfront has and will continue to provide high caliber advancement training, intentionally scheduled for weeks prior to exam dates," said Chief Information Systems Technician Warren Quiambao, IWTC San Diego's IT rating leading Chief Petty Officer. "In addition to a focus on advancement, Sailors can apply what they learn here to everyday shipboard IT policies, procedures, and best practices. This training also helps to promote cultures of academia and excellence, and improves Fleet readiness.”

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training organization, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct Information System operations across the full spectrum of military operations.
