During the event, the staff of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum teamed up with local chief petty officers to present three days of heritage training for the selectees aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64).

“Perhaps more than any other program, this signature event embodies our mission to interpret naval history to reinforce the U.S. Navy’s proud tradition, heritage, honor, and esprit de corps,” said John Pentangelo, director, Hampton Roads Naval Museum “There is nothing else like it.”

Selectees learned about the first African-American chief petty officers, famous naval battles and the history of women in the Navy.

“This is an opportunity for chief selectees to connect with their history and gain new insights that will help them become stronger Navy leaders,” said Senior Chief Boiler Technician (Ret.) Tom Dandes, Military Ceremonies Coordinator, Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

Selectees were able to speak with Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (Ret.) Duane Bushey among many other guest speakers.

After the presentations, commands competed for “Best Mess” where they were tested on naval history and judged on guidon marching and cadence.

“It was cool seeing the large variety of the selectees and seeing what was important to them through their guidons and presentations,” said Chief Select Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) Joseph Ramson, assigned to Navy Recruiting District Pittsburgh, “You really got to see the things that they take pride in.”

The event concluded with guest speakers and an open forum with senior navy leadership.

Naval Station Norfolk pinning ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 15.
