While stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, Herring was involved in nearly all high-visibility projects epitomized the Air Force core values and positively influenced those Airmen who surrounded him.
“This dedication is one of those special occasions where we are able to celebrate the memory of one of our own: Staff Sergeant Cody Herring,” said Col. Kenneth Herndon, 820th RHS commander. “For the 820th RHS, this occasion is specifically unique because not only was he a tried and true RED- HORSEman, but we built this road knowing the memories of Cody are alive and well in our compound.”
Herring was an exemplary member of any civil engineer squadron at which he was stationed, including Anderson Air Force Base, Guam, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
“Anyone who knew Cody, and even those who didn't know him that well, had nothing but great things to say about him,” said Herndon. “As one of our instructors, he was a ‘jack of all trades’ and taught pretty much everything we offered. He was always at the front of the line to deploy and never hesitated for the toughest and most dangerous duties, including the convoys through Iraq at a dangerous time during [Operation] Iraqi Freedom.”
Herring was an Airman who exemplified the core values in everything he did, said Herndon. Whether it was at home-station or the battlefield, he was a leader who influenced all the members of the 820th RHS he came in contact with.
“It is evident to me that ‘service before self’ was his strongest suit,” said Herndon. “He had a passion for what he did as a dirtboy, as one of our special capabilities instructors, and as an Airman.”
