Retired Master Sgt. Glenn Husted, a former tank commander of the Mississippi Army National Guard, is the collections manager for the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum.
“It’s my job to take care of the collection here and to arrange it, present it, and explain it to the public, and to save it for history,” Husted said.
At the museum, his goal is to preserve artifacts and learn and understand their histories.
“One of the primary focuses of the job is to conserve historical artifacts and in particular, armaments,” said the retired Master Sgt. “Whatever that is we need to study, we learn everything about its provenance, where it fits into history, and then we have to apply the sciences of conservation to it to make it stable so that it can be passed forward 100 years or more.”
Husted has been working at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby since 2000. When he began working at the museum, he was put in charge of the restoration of an M2A2 Light Tank from 1936 found in Flora, Mississippi.
“I already knew the anatomy of tanks, I knew a lot of history of tanks, but this is such an unusual piece it has taken years and years and years to unravel the mystery and there’s still a few pieces missing, but we’ve come an awful long way in the last decade,” Husted said.
By the time he began working at the museum, he already had years of experience with tanks.
“It’s kind of like full circle for me,” Husted said. “I was a master gunner on three different types of vehicles. I was a master gunner instructor and had done service overseas. I trained other Soldiers from other armies and it was a great time of my life and now.”
For his career at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum, Husted puts on display stories of previous wars for people to understand the state’s, the Mississippi National Guard’s, and the Army’s history.
“These artifacts are pieces of evidence to our military history,” said Husted.
Wherever a Soldier served, we hold items that are testimonies to his or her services, said Husted.
Husted is committed to his job and stresses the importance of preserving and sharing history.
“It’s a component of the fabric of our society that we preserve these things that they are not forgotten,” said Husted. “When we lose sight of what it takes to be a free country, it’s over. The flag can come off my shoulder, and we’re done. So I’m going to fight as long as I can to represent what’s being done in the service of freedom.”
