Saber Guardian 17 is a combination of several tactical exercises between NATO allies to increase readiness and interoperability between all partners. Though it kicked off earlier this summer, RSS Soldiers, commanded by Lt. Col. Estrada continues to seize opportunities to cross train with NATO allies.

“I think it’s important to work with our host nation partners and allies”, said 2nd Lt. Collin Mangan, of Support Operations, RSS. “By conducting familiarization training it will allow us to better work on and understand the equipment that each nation uses.”

It’s been more than a week since the RSS Soldiers arrived in Hungary and for Pfc. Labrinda McNeal, an Orlando, FL native and a newly recruited Soldier said the multi-national exercise challenges her proficiency.

“When troops go out on mission, we make sure their vehicles are filled and ready, it’s one area Soldiers rely on us to take care of them by doing our job and we take that very seriously,” said McNeal.

They call themselves “fuelers” but their tasks go beyond merely pumping humvee gages to the full line, they also ensure the fuel used is up to U.S. standards and if it isn’t they have been trained to put in the additives to make it so. This requires additional training and the RSS Soldiers have become proficient, which proves their ability to overcome obstacles.

But McNeal says nothing compares to loving what you do.

“I love helping people and I’m doing that abroad by doing what I was trained to do as a Soldier”, said Mc Neal. “I came straight out of high school and since being over seas I have questioned myself why did I not do what every other high school graduate does, and that’s go straight to college but when I do question myself, I remind myself that I am grateful that I get to train with Soldiers from around the world”.

Although Saber Guardian has been an annual exercise since 2013 it continues to challenge a Soldier’s proficiency to perform tasks for which they were trained to do and their leaders to lead them.

“I’ve always wanted to be a Soldier and I’m doing my best to make sure this mission is a success”, said Mangan. (U.S. Army Article by Sgt. Sharmain Burch)
