High school students from across America visited the Marine Corps Engineer School for the U.S. Marine Corps Society of American Military Engineers Engineering and Construction Camp at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, June 22. The SAME offers scholarships designed to encourage students to pursue careers in the engineering job field.
SAME collaborates with military services for week-long engineering and construction camps designed for students who excel in their classes and are interested in pursuing engineering, architecture or related fields in college.
“We’ve done five camps and the planning started in 2010,” said Joe Angell, director of SAME United States Marine Corps engineering construction. “It was a collaboration between the Society of American Military Engineers and the Marine Corps. I had a couple of buddies who helped me with the idea. The Society of American Military Engineers has been running camps with the Air Force and the Army for about 15 years and we thought it was time that we had a camp with the Marine Corps.”
Students were flown to Camp Lejeune, separated into squads and assigned Marine squad leaders. The camps first event challenged students to design and create a concrete beam that would be put to the test the day before they head back home. The students designed and built a trebuchet, cardboard amphibious assault vehicles and storm water basin. Each squad tested their creations and discussed why they performed the way they did.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Cpl. James Bissonnette, squad leader for the camp. “It’s completely different interacting with high school kids, trying to dial down the Marine and learning different types of leadership. I’ve enjoyed working with the kids and it’s been a blast with all the different things we get to do. Earlier this week, we built a trebuchet and that’s something I want to do with my Marines now. I would have never thought to do anything like that.”
As a squad leader, Bissonnette was in charge of students and shared what he’s learned from the Marine Corps Engineer School. The squad leaders also introduced the students to the area while sharing some Marine Corps history.
“We at SAME see this as the future of America,” said Angell. “These high school kids that we get to bring in are all interested in some sort of engineer field. Many of them are already looking at certain colleges or professions they want to go into.”
High school students like Ian Moritz were excited to visit Camp Lejeune and take a view into the life of a Marine Corps engineer.
“I’m happy I’m here,” said Moritz. “I was planning on becoming an engineer, but this camp made me realize there are a lot of options in the military, so now I’m considering ROTC at a technical school. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m happy for having this opportunity.”
