WAYNESBORO, Va. – Members of the armed forces often receive support from home, however, the wife of a Virginia National Guard Soldier has taken it several steps further.
Meredith Kane Read, wife of Spc. Phillip Read and a nursing student at James Madison University, has started "Sleep for Soldiers," an initiative that provides bedding materials for deployed troops.
She was first inspired by her husband's mother, who sent her son an egg crate mattress pad when he was first deployed three years ago. It worked so well that when he would return from missions he would often find another Soldier asleep in his bed.
Meredith then assembled 32 kits, one for each platoon member in her husband's unit, consisting of an egg crate mattress pad, a set of sheets and a pillow to the tune of $30 to $35 per box.
Since then, 295 boxes have been shipped to five different locations in Iraq, and Meredith has received many thanks in terms of e-mails, thank you cards and even a certificate from grateful Soldiers.
Even though Phillip is safely home, and nursing school takes up much of her time, Meredith plans to continue her small program for as long as contributions continue, because the need for good sleep never stops.
