It was Apr. 25, 1945, as “Fame’s Favored Few” took to the skies for their 310th and final combat mission.
The 92nd Bombardment Group led the last 8th Air Force bombing mission in the European Theater, bombing the Skoda Armament plants in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.
Lt. Col. William Nelson, 92nd BG air executive, flew as the air commander with Lt. Thomas White's crew of the 325th Bombardment Squadron.
Three-hundred and seven B-17 Flying Fortresses were sent to hit the airfield and Skokda armament works at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia; six aircraft were lost, four damaged beyond repair and 180 damaged. Eight Airmen were wounded in action and 42 Airmen were missing in action.
The 92nd BG was a B-17 group consisting of the 325th, 326th and 327th Bombardment Squadrons. The group was constituted Jan. 28, 1942, and activated Mar. 1, 1942, at Barksdale Field, Louisiana.
In the late fall of 1942, the group was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England where they participated in more than 300 operational bombings including Normandy, Operation Market Garden, Rhineland and Ardennes-Alsace.
Throughout its 310 missions, the group lost 154 aircraft.
