PENSACOLA, Fla. – Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) recognized its top Sailor and instructor for the 2nd quarter of fiscal year 2017 during an award ceremony June 14.
Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Alexander W. Lange, from NETC Learning Site (LS) Sigonella, Sicily, was selected as the Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) and Navy Counselor 1st Class Shiane M. Heath, from NETC LS Dam Neck, Virginia, was named the Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ).
NETC Commander Rear Adm. Mike White recognized Lange and Heath for their hard work and commitment to training Sailors.
“I am so proud of our awardees’ accomplishments and contributions,” said White. “It's a testament to the entire NETC team that we have such amazing Sailors representing us and making a difference every day.”
During the award period, Lange trained 182 leaders across 41 commands while facilitating Command Managed Equal Opportunity (CMEO), Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA), and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Management Seminar for Leaders programs. In addition to his command involvement, he serves as the president for the Naval Air Station Sigonella First Class Petty Officer Association.
“More careers and lives are lost due to alcohol and other drugs,” said Lange. “These issues affect the world, not just our military, and I’m glad that our learning site can equip future DAPAs with the tools to help save Sailors’ careers and lives.”
Lange’s mother passed away as a result of drugs, and he described feeling satisfied when he is able to educate others.
“There is no better feeling, than at the end of the class, when you have 24 DAPAs motivated and ready to better the fleet,” said Lange.
As Region East command career counselor (CCC), Heath taught 11 students and five Navy counselors in three CCC courses.
“In the classroom we share knowledge and experience to take to the fleet to help Sailors,” said Heath. “Those students always bring something to the table that helps me learn and develop my skills.”
In addition to instructing, Heath handled 16 career milestone executive packages to include a variety of screenings, reenlistments, retirements and fleet Reserve transitions for Sailors.
“I am a firm believer that knowledge is power,” said Heath. “By providing information to my Sailors, I am giving them the power to make the best decision for them with all the opportunities that are afforded to them.
Senior Chief Navy Counselor Laura Rudy from LS Dam Neck described the feedback she receives from students who have completed instruction under Heath.
"She is a very energetic subject matter expert," said Rudy. She is passionate about educating Sailors in CCC programs.”
The IOQ and SOQ programs are designed to recognize and reward the performance and dedication of outstanding enlisted Sailors.
