USAMU PAO
FORT BENNING, Ga. – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) competitive shooting teams work daily to be the best marksmen in the world. Here is a review of their accomplishments for the week ending June 4.
Competitions
Action Shooting
Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Horner from Norfolk, Virginia, and Staff Sgt. Joel Turner from Anderson, South Carolina, took home first place during the 2017 3 Gun Nation South Regional match in Talladega, Alabama, June 1-4.
Horner won the Practical (Tactical Optics) Division by 60 points over the next competitor, while Turner claimed the podium’s top spot in the Unlimited (Open) Division, defeating the closest competitor by 30 points.
Staff Sgt. Tyler Payne from Minneapolis, Minnesota competed at the 2017 Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Tactical Supply Bolt Gun match in Yakima, Washington June 1-4.
Payne finished fifth out of 72 competitors in the Open Division and had the highest score in the military/law enforcement category.
Marketing Engagements
Shotgun Demonstrations
Sgt. 1st Class Mark Weeks, Shotgun Team Chief from Warren, Michigan and two-time Olympian Sgt. 1st Class Josh Richmond from Sayre, Pennsylvania, conducted two world-class marksmanship demonstrations.
Weeks and Richmond conducted a Shotgun demo and meet and greet with Army advocates, future Soldiers and families in Alexandria, Minnesota, May 29-31.
Richmond and Weeks interacted with the crowd, sharing their Army story. Army advocates are a vital part of the Army’s external network, providing potential leads and helping promote Army service to the American people.
Weeks and Richmond also performed a Shotgun demonstration for an audience of over 600 people at the 2017 Arkansas State Junior and Senior Championship, May 31 through June 3.
The demonstration served as the kickoff event to the championship. The Soldiers exhibited different aspects of the Army through their demonstration of marksmanship skills and performance while sharing the Army story including the wide variety of options available to Soldiers as a career path.
The USAMU continues to support the Marketing and Engagement Mission by connecting America with America’s Army.
Training the Force
Instructor Training Group
Army Marksmanship instructors provided re-certification to Military Marksmanship Training Course cadre from Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment during rifle marksmanship training at Fort Benning, June 1.
The instructors mapped out a progressive path to train Soldiers on everything from fundamental shooting to complex engagements, as well as continually improve their own skills as shooters, coaches, and instructors.
Instructors are expected to be subject matter experts and must be able to correct shooter deficiencies and let Soldiers, so they know what they are doing correctly, culminating in automated record fire (ARF), and Mid-Range Marksmanship qualification.
The USAMU continues to support the Army by having expert marksmen share their knowledge and skills with fellow Soldiers in an effort to produce the most professional, lethal and qualified warfighters in the world.
