    88th Readiness Division

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers and family members from across 16 different states gathered at a hotel in suburban Minneapolis for a Yellow Ribbon event as part of the reintegration process of the deployment cycle hosted by the 88th Regional Support Command, June 9 to 11.

More than 350 Soldiers and family members from 13 separate units participated in events 3 and 4 of the Yellow Ribbon program. These events are for the first and second post-deployment cycle.

During these two iterations, the focus is on family reintegration as well as any post-deployment questions a Soldier might have – such as Veterans benefits, employment issues or counseling, to name a few of the resources available here.

“A lot of the information they’re handing out are applicable to different people who might not be in the same situation that I’m in,” said Spc. Reed Kuhnley, from the 461st Engineer Company out of Fargo, North Dakota, who recently completed a deployment to Southwest Asia as part of Operation Spartan Shield.

Through community partner booths and instructor-led group sessions the Soldiers and family members attending the Yellow Ribbon events are presented with a plethora of resources geared toward helping them prepare for, during and after a deployment.

“What the (Yellow Ribbon) program does is it’s basically preparing Soldiers and their family members – whether they’re the adults or the children – for the deployment cycle,” said Sylvia Lopez, the Yellow Ribbon program manager for the 88th RSC.

During the weekend, Soldiers and their family members are presented with group presentations that cover broad topics such as reintegration, employment issues, health-related questions and navigating military life. There are also smaller break-out sessions that cover topics such as home buying, parenting, resume building and a litany of other relevant topics to Soldiers and their families.

“There are so many resources,” Lopez said. “I hope that what they take away is something that is need-based. If they have an issue or a need that they find the resource here to address that specifically. If they have no issues, they can take the resources as a growth opportunity.”

The 88th RSCs Yellow Ribbon program hosts events across the 19-state region. The next event is scheduled for July 7 to 9 in Kansas City, Missouri.
