YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – Sailors assigned to the 555 Cyber Protection Team (CPT) and NIOC Yokosuka gave cyber awareness, internet safety and cyber bullying training to students from Sullivan’s Elementary School throughout the month of April.

Sailors from 555 Cyber Protection Team (CPT) stationed in Yokosuka, Japan met with faculty from Sullivan's Elementary School, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) committee to provide educational presentations for children throughout the month of April.

Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 1st Class Nicholas Culver, Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 2nd Class Preston Dizmang, and Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 2nd Class Alexander Arnold delivered training covering cyber awareness, internet safety and cyber bullying. They presented the training to 12 classes ranging from 2nd to 5th grade on April 21 and April 24.

The training documented the "do's and don'ts" of internet use including not sharing personal information and photographs and to always remember that when you talk to people on the internet it's just like talking to a stranger.

The Sailors conveyed to the students the importance of discussing their internet activities with their parents and teachers and that they should alert an adult if they witnessed anything strange or inappropriate online.

The training also involved a game where the children were presented with a series of legitimate websites and emails, alongside fake website and phishing emails designed to look legitimate and they would have to detect the "cyber stranger” attempting to trick them into divulging personal information or account credentials. After a brief education on what signs to look for, the students were able to identify fake websites and phishing emails during the short exercise.

555 CPT has been asked to continue to provide enriched technical training to further the schools STEAM program. Currently, 555 CPT is building a pilot technical training program designed specifically to introduce 5th grade classes to the more technical aspects of internet safety and internet protocol analysis.
