Bataan Donates $100K to MWR by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW/AW) Mutis A. Capizzi, Bataan Public Affairs

This momentous achievement by the Supply department’s sales and services division (S-3) came from funds collect from items purchased through the ship’s store and vending machines from February to May 2017.
Chief Ship’s Serviceman Wendy Davis, the leading chief petty officer for S-3 division, said that she has only seen this amount of funds raised on an aircraft carrier and it is phenomenal to see an amphibious assault ship raise such a large amount in a short amount of time with a crew that is significantly smaller than a carrier.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for S-3,” said Davis. “It is a testament to their hard work.”

S-3 held a cake cutting on the mess decks for the crew to mark the considerable donation. Bataan’s commanding officer, Capt. Eric Pfister, made remarks about S-3’s commitment to the crew.
“You guys are running it (the ship’s store and vending machines) very effectively,” said Pfister. “Thank you for this check and thank you for the hard work each and every one of you put in day by day.”
Pfister went on to say that he was surprised with the amount raised in such a short time and that S-3 took advantage of their unique opportunity to give back to the crew by donating to MWR.
MWR, also known as Afloat Recreation, provides recreational services that contribute to the retention, readiness, mental, physical and emotional well-being of Sailors and Marines while deployed. This donation will be used to fund various activities and gear for the crew to use during deployment.
“This donation will go towards our deployment cruise books and prizes to be given away during deployment,” said Bataan’s Afloat Recreation Specialist, Brooke Webber. “It will also fund t-shirts, new MWR gear and will allow us to further subsidize tours in upcoming port visits.”
Bataan and its ready group are currently deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
