A portion of Article 6 under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) states “the Judge Advocate General or senior members of his staff shall make frequent inspection in the field in supervision of the administration of military justice.”
Upholding this doctrine, Maj. Gen. Brian Newby, Air National Guard assistant to the judge advocate general (JAG) of the Air Force, paid a visit to Horsham Air Guard Station, Horsham, Pennsylvania, June 3, 2017 for an Article 6 Inspection.
And Newby was pleased with his visit to the Horsham JAG office.
“You have an outstanding legal office here,” Newby said. “And that’s really what our focus has been--ensuring that good order and discipline is in place through the legal office.”
With more than 30-years of service, Newby says the highlight of his career has been visiting bases nationally and ensuring that legal offices are advocating the standards of the Air Force and the UCMJ.
In addition to meeting with members of the JAG office, he also had the opportunity to meet with 111th Attack Wing Commander, Col. Howard L. Eissler.
“I had a fantastic visit with Colonel Eissler,” Newby said. “He gave us a run down on the unit [and] the issues that the unit is facing.”
In December, the JAG office underwent a Wing inspection and was able to identify and fix shortfalls in preparation for the Article 6 inspection.
“We wanted to make sure any deficiencies that we had were in order,” said Maj. Ronald K. Palmer, 111th Attack Wing’s staff judge advocate. “We knew they were coming with the inspection report and they were going to be interested in those items.”
The JAG office rectified the issues from December’s inspection and had a seamless and all too quick visit with Newby.
