Story by Master Sgt. Jeff Walston

    913th Airlift Group

The 913th Airlift Group began implementing the Air Force’s new Sexual Assault Prevention and Response training program during the July Unit Assembly Training (UTA) weekend.

Green Dot, which was created by Dr. Dorothy Edwards, is now a mandatory course for all Airmen.

The training program has been credited with reducing the amount of violent incidents in some universities, high schools and small communities. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded study showed a 50 percent reduction in sexual violence at high schools implementing Green Dot.

Green Dot teaches Airmen they have several options to overcome barriers that stand in the way of intervening when they witness violent situations by providing individuals with the knowledge and skills, to intervene in uncomfortable situations. They can delegate, be direct, or use distraction to deescalate a violent encounter and prevent sexual assaults without putting themselves at risk.

“The training made me more aware of potential domestic violence situations in a variety of different environments,” said Master Sgt. Randall Lynch, historian for the 913th Airlift Group. “I think it was useful, and it will get Airmen thinking about the topic.”

The program does not obligate a person to act, as some Air Force programs do, but tries to motivate a person to act by giving them the information and knowledge they need to do so.

Lynch said. “The instructors were engaged and well prepared, but in my opinion after setting through the class, the material should include more in-depth training on the parameters of what is expected of Airmen who find themselves facing the decision to intervene in a domestic violence situation. That being said, I believe the Green Dot Program is a step in the right direction to increase awareness of the domestic violence issue.”

Instructors from the 19th Airlift Wing facilitated the training.

After completing the four hour version of the Green Dot program, Senior Airman Jasmine Bowman, a traffic management specialist assigned to the 19th Logistics readiness Squadron, volunteered to teach the course to other Airmen.

“The program is different than the old way we were trained, in that no one is forced to intervene into a situation, but are given the information they need to want to intervene in many situations they may find themselves in,” Bowman said.

All Airmen from the 913 AG are scheduled to complete the training during the August UTA.
