Albert Einstein once said, “The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”
In 2016, the Air Force implemented Green Dot, a comprehensive approach to violence prevention, in an effort to reduce sexual assaults and domestic violence within the service.
Green Dot, which is an annual requirement for all Airmen, is in its second year of implementation.
Training sessions for the 913th Airlift Group have started for 2017.
The specialized training teaches Airmen how to overcome barriers that may stand in the way of intervening when they witness potentially violent situations.
Airmen are taught that they can delegate, be direct, or use the method of distraction to reduce a violent encounter and avert sexual assaults without putting themselves or others at risk.
“The training reinforced the premise I’ve always believed, and that is if you see something, standup, say something and do something” said Tech Sgt. David Shore, emergency management specialist, 913th Airlift Group.
Green Dot has been credited with reducing the amount of violent incidents in some universities, high schools and small communities. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded study showed a 50 percent reduction in sexual violence at high schools implementing Green Dot.
“This training does help,” Shore said. “But, I believe there would be more benefits with hands-on training instead of just suggestions. Practicing procedures does help.”
Green Dot does not force a person to act when they witness a violent act, however the training equips individuals with the skills to intercede in uncomfortable situations.
Volunteer instructors from the 19th Airlift Wing facilitated the training. Air Reserve Technicians, or full-time people assigned to the 913 AG are taking the training with their active duty counterparts during the week, while traditional reservists are scheduled to take the training the April Unit Training Assembly Weekend.
