FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. – Capt. Joe Johnson relieved Capt. Jeffrey Scheidt as commanding officer, Cryptologic Warfare Group (CWG) 6, formerly Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Maryland, during a change of command ceremony held at McGlachlin Parade Field on Fort George G. Meade, Md., June 9.

In addition to CWG-6, three new commands were established during the ceremony. Cryptologic Warfare Maritime Activity (CWMA) 61, Cyber Strike Activity (CSA) 63 and Cyber Defense Activity (CDA) 64 will serve as subordinate commands to CWG-6.

Prior to changing command, Scheidt addressed the crew as the last commanding officer of NIOC Maryland.

“With my last few moments in command, I want to highlight the fantastic achievements of the past 20 months. During our time together, you have earned numerous language excellence awards, been a repeat winner of regional community service excellence awards, promoted at rates above Navy-wide averages, and beat the local Army team to win the flag football tournament,” said Scheidt. “Now, as Cryptologic Warfare Group Six, you are at the energetic core of the Navy’s growing information warfare community. As technology and modern conflict will inevitably evolve, this command will continue to set the global standard of excellence. The future has never looked brighter.”

Prior to Johnson’s new assignment as commanding officer of CWG-6, he served as Deputy Chief, Office of East Asia and Pacific at the National Security Agency (NSA) from March 2014 to May 2017.

“Throughout my career as a Navy cryptologist, I’ve admired this command and its superb reputation,” said Johnson. “I am thrilled to join your team today. As we mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, during which Navy cryptology played a vital role, our command honors a rich heritage by meeting today’s challenges while preparing for those we will face tomorrow.”

Vice Adm. Mike Gilday, commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet, presided over the ceremony.

“To the officers, chiefs, Sailors and civilians of Cryptologic Warfare Group Six, I thank each of you for the long days spent preparing for today’s ceremony and I congratulate you for an impressive string of successes,” said Gilday. “Your pride shines through every single day. I think you epitomize the selfless courage and inspiring devotion to duty of your heritage.”

The primary mission of CWG-6 and subordinate commands is to provide cryptologic and related intelligence information to fleet, joint and national commanders as well as administrative and personnel support to Department of the Navy members assigned to the Fort Meade area.

U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.

U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade, Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
