KABUL, Afghanistan – As Afghanistan continues to increase accountability across the government to combat corruption, a key area of concern is military logistics operations.
Maj. Gen. Richard Kaiser, Commanding General of Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan (CSTC-A) and His Excellency Tariq Shah Bahrami, Afghanistan as acting Minister of Defense, made a joint visit to the Central Supply Depot (CSD) in Kabul, May 17, 2017.
The CSD provides national level support for logistic warehouse operations. These operations include receiving, accounting for and shipping items like boots, uniforms and repair parts to Afghan military forces. As CSD leaders walked Bahrami through uniform and medical warehouses, he observed their level of adherence to newly established Afghan logistic processes.
“Minister Bahrami’s visit to the Afghan National Army’s CSD helps ensure ANA soldiers receive the equipment they need, while reducing potential corruption. This says a tremendous amount about his character, integrity and care for soldiers,” said Kaiser.
During the visit, CSD staff raised challenges with implementing all facets of Core Inventory Management System, which allows the minister to view the status and level of supplies nationwide. They also brought up concerns about CSD personnel strength, pay issues and turning key positions in the Afghan logistic footprint over to civilians.
“If you have [pay] issues, I am in your service…contact me, but people involved in corruption will be prosecuted,” said Bahrami. “Winning this war is our responsibility; the key to winning is having leaders execute good operations with good equipment…this is our country.”
Since taking his position as acting minister at the end of April, Bahrami has welcomed NATO’s assistance in developing Afghan capabilities across the country. Bahrami is awaiting final parliamentary confirmation as minister of defense.
