“Hard charging soldier” is how Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen Farmer of Newberry, SC, Headquarters Company, 122nd Eng. Bn., South Carolina Army National Guard, describes Staff Sgt. Paul Hunsinger of Guin, AL, of the Forward Support Company, 926th Eng. Bn., 926th Eng. Bde., United States Army Reserves. Staff Sgt. Hunsinger has been a critical asset in over 25 vehicles being returned to the fight during Resolute Castle 2017, which is currently underway at the Joint National Training Center, Cincu, Romania.
Staff Sgt. Paul Hunsinger states that “family tradition” is the reason why he began his military career 21 years ago. He has a family history of American Warriors dating back to the early 1800s, including his father who retired from the Alabama National Guard. Staff Sgt. Hunsinger began his military career in the Air Force, working in Security Forces in Saudia Arabia and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. His six years in the Air Force took him to Spain in 1989 and to Iraq in 1990-1991, supporting Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
After the Air Force, Staff Sgt. Hunsinger began his Army career as a mechanic with the 877th Eng. Bn., Alabama National Guard, where he spent three years. He then moved over to the Transition Reserve Unit in Jasper, AL. He worked with this unit after Hurricane Katrina clearing roads, delivering ice and water, and recovering human remains from the debris. Currently, Staff Sgt. Hunsinger works Active Guard Reserve as a Motor Sergeant for the Forward Support Company, 926th Eng. Bn. This position has taken him to Mississippi, California, Germany, Alaska, Wisconsin, Alabama, and Iraq.
Staff Sgt. Hunsinger was deployed to Iraq for the second time in his military career during 2009-2010. He started his time there as a Motorpool Mechanic and ended his tour as a Platoon Sergeant. He was mission commander on 37 convoy missions and survived 8 IED encounters with no injury.
Staff Sgt. Hunsinger has brought his vast military experience with him to support Resolute Castle 2017. He has performed duties as Motor Sergeant with the Forward Support Company, 926th Eng. Bn. in Romania.
“He hit the ground running,” per Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen Farmer of Newberry, SC, Headquarters Company, 122nd Eng. Bn. Staff Sgt. Hunsinger’s daily duties begin with checking any vehicle maintenance issues that arose since the evening prior. He deploys contact teams to try to correct issues on ground. If vehicle maintenance issues are more than the contact team’s capabilities, the vehicle will be driven or towed to the maintenance tent, where issues are corrected.
Staff Sgt. Hunsinger has enjoyed his time in Romania and loves the country’s beautiful landscapes. He also believes this mission has been very good for the younger Soldiers. He says, “This has been a great teaching tool for the less experienced Soldiers to get experience with learning the right way to do things. When mistakes happen, they can be corrected on the spot.”
Staff Sgt. Hunsinger is fulfilling a family tradition of military service to the United States of America. He hopes to pass this along to one of his four children; in the meantime, he shares it with the Soldiers he leads.
