BAGHDAD – More than 215 U.S. service members are expected to run in the Road Runner Akron Marathon from Victory Base Complex Sept. 14, 2008.
The official race will take place Sept. 27 in Akron, Ohio. Race officials agreed to sponsor the satellite race, which is a half marathon, in Baghdad after a request from 1st Sgt. Carl Berg, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th Mountain Division first sergeant and a native of Monroe Falls, Ohio.
Berg and other running enthusiasts from Multi-National Division-Center organized the satellite run. Morale, Welfare and Recreation representatives assisted the runners in securing the support needed to hold a satellite run.
Approximately 10,000 people will run the 2008 RRAM, which was named one of the "50 Great U.S. Marathons" in a 2005 book written by Michaela Gaaserud and Renee Dexter, entitled 'Fairbanks to Boston - 50 Great U.S. Marathons.'
The satellite race had to be held Sept.14 due to logistical limitations on Victory Base Complex.
