NORFOLK, Va. – Commander Naval Information Forces, Rear Adm. Matthew J. Kohler attended the first Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Hampton Roads Maritime Information Technology Summit in conjunction with the Department of the Navy’s Information Technology training Conference, May 17.
The AFCEA Hampton Roads Maritime Summit provides a forum for military, government and industry communities to collaborate so that technology and strategy align with the needs of those who serve.
“Naval Information Forces was established nearly three years ago specifically to meet rising readiness demands for Navy Information Warfare capabilities that are increasingly critical to Navy warfighting,” said Kohler during his luncheon keynote address before an audience in Virginia’s largest hotel ballroom located at the Hilton Main hotel in downtown Norfolk. “Information Warfare has been brought to the very front of Naval Warfare by many of the strategic forces highlighting in The Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority,” he continued.
As the TYCOM continues to evolve since its establishment in 2014, Kohler addressed the needs coming from the fleet that NAVIFOR continues to keep pace with.
“An example of one of NAVIFOR’s achievements this past year is the establishment of the Naval Information Warfighting Development Center, headquartered in Norfolk,” said Kohler. “Like the other warfighting development centers, it is a place for innovation, doctrine and tactics development, and advanced training, designed to take Information Warfare capabilities to the next level.”
During the luncheon, AFCEA Awards were presented to outstanding Sailors and civilians in various categories such as Military Cyber Professional, Civilian Cyber Professional and the Cyber Team.
“We thank these individuals and acknowledge them for their great work they perform every day in their area of expertise,” said the President of the Hampton Roads AFCEA Chapter, Palmer Sims.
Capt. Kathy Mayer, NAVIFOR’s Assistant Chief of Staff, was surprised with an award for her exceptional dedicated service as the AFCEA Hampton Roads Chapter Vice President for Awards as she will retire after devoting 30 years of Naval service later this year.
AFCEA International has 31,487 members, 151 chapters and 1,586 corporate members internationally and has helped members advance information technology, communications and electronics capabilities since 1946. The Hampton Roads Chapter of AFCEA International was created 28 years ago.
NAVIFOR’s mission is to provide combat-ready Information Warfare forces to operational commanders, ashore and afloat, that are forward deployable, fully trained, properly manned, capably equipped, always ready, well-maintained and combat sustainable.
