Fort Stewart – Noncommissioned Officers from the 3rd Infantry Division came together to embark on the journey to improve such and in the Army by partaking in the Not in My Squad workshop May 18, at Fort Stewart, GA.
The NIMS was initially designed for the Sexual Harassment /Assault Response & Program but the Army has taken it a step further. Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel A. Dailey explained that NIMS is designed as a grass-root initiative to target problems on a cellular level and find solutions to improve the Army.
For the past two days, the Noncommissioned Officers from Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart have talked about the issues that the leaders see and possibly deal with on a day-to-day basis.
Staff Sgt. Corey Drew Witt, an instructor for the NIMS workshop, explains what his roles as an instructor are and what he has seen from the leaders in his group.
“My job is to help guide them to solutions to the issues the leaders face about general subjects that the leaders already know,” said Witt. “The leaders here have been actively engaged in the discussions and have made positive strides to make changes at their level.”
Army Sgt. Bernice Myers, an AH-64 Attack Helicopter repairer, gave insight on the class from her eyes.
“There were many other leaders from different backgrounds and military occupation specialty (MOS), and we got to see that. Even though we all do different jobs, we still face the same problems,” said Myers. “This class wasn’t like a censing session. The instructors made us solve our own problems and we learned a lot,” she said.
Myers said the class left her intrigued and interested in the topics from the issues to the resolution.
“I wouldn’t mind having my soldiers participate in training like this if only for a day,” said Myers. “In order for my soldiers to see that they’re not the only ones dealing with the issues, and we the leaders are going to fix it.”
Staff Sgt. Corey Witt, an instructor for the NIMS workshop, said the training here is empowering the leaders to take control and unify their squads making them stronger.
“The leaders here are willing to learn and they want to correct issues,” said Witt. “The leaders here want to be prideful Dogface Soldiers.”
