NEW ORLEANS - Sgt. Juvante Butler, an administrative specialist with 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, was presented the New Orleans Mayor’s Community Service Award at the World War II Museum in New Orleans, May 20, 2017.
The Mayor’s Community Service Award is given to one member of each military branch for their exceptional volunteer service.
Each year, service members are nominated to receive the award for their hard work within the New Orleans community. Butler was selected to represent the Marine Corps for his outstanding involvement and mentorship within The Knights of Pythagoras, where he serves as an adviser.
“I was shocked, it was an emotional moment,” he said. “I went against a lot of other great Marines and knowing that I actually won, was very touching.”
The Knights of Pythagoras is a mentorship program created to council young men on making good decisions and to educate them to become better men.
“We are strong believers. We believe in improving ourselves and the kids to prepare them for adulthood,” said Butler.
Butler is one of the original founding members of the program. He has been involved with the Knights of Pythagoras since Sept. 13, 2015 as an adviser for Phileo Council group 1.
The adviser’s mission is to help young men decide to never stop fighting for what they believe in as they learn how to conduct themselves as adults.
“The advisers teach them that the sky is the limit to success and nobody can stop them,” said Butler.
Butler thanked his fellow advisers for their commitment with the mentorship program and for helping with the young men.
“I thank God and the advisers for everything that we do, 4th Marine Division as a whole for the nomination and support at the ceremony along with those who came out to support me and finally to Marine Forces Reserve for their support,” said Butler.
