KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. – The 36th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron motto is “Triumph Over Adversity.” Although 2016 was a year of transition for the squadron with their move from Pope Field, North Carolina to Keesler, they earned four Air Force Reserve Command aeromedical evacuation awards.

“Despite all the turmoil we faced, the squadron kept driving forward and now we’ve been recognized by Air Force Reserve Command for our efforts,” said Col. Tom Hansen, 36th AES commander.

“The 36th AES continues to rise amidst any and all adversity,” said Lt. Col. Rosalind Johnson, 36th AES director of operations.

Senior Master Sgt. Anthony Staut, 36th AES operations support flight chief, was selected as outstanding senior noncommissioned officer assigned to a reserve aeromedical evacuation squadron. Staut helped plan and execute the unit’s relocation with more than 80 percent packed out within one week. He helped coordinate the movement of 14 pallets and three trailers of supplies and equipment to help the squadron return to combat mission-ready status within 45 days. He also worked with the 403rd Wing Recruiting office to spread the word that the 36th AES was hiring and help increase manning by 100 percent within five months.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Davis was selected as outstanding aeromedical evacuation operations support NCO of the year. Davis was selected by the commander of the AFRC AE Flight Training Unit to assist in reallocation and disposition of $2 million of Air Mobility Command and AFRC assets during that unit’s closure. He drafted a drug disposal and resupply plan with the base pharmacy and crafted an alternate supply chain for backordered items. He prepared multiple AE in-flight kits in support of exercise Southern Strike and instructed other assigned logistics personnel in the proper procedures to maintain a fully mission-ready status for the 12 training missions conducted during the exercise.

The Lillian Keil Team Award recognizes a team making the most significant contributions to the mobility forces' aeromedical evacuation mission during contingency operations. The squadron earned this award by completing 72 missions with 13 urgent, 23 priority and 164 routine patients moved for NATO Canadian Forces. They improved area of responsibility processes by conducting TRANSCOM regulating and command and control evacuation system review. They also flew 151 combat sorties with 200 ill or injured members moved without incident.

The squadron earned the AE Excellence in Leadership and Management Team Award by forging a partnership with special operations forces and training the special operations surgical team on aeromedical evacuation capabilities. They transported 20 litter pads to Kandahar Air Field NATO hospital, enabling 21 missions. They also managed $3.5 million in AE assets and 21 AE crew members trained on and launched new in-flight equipment.

“The squadron has worked really hard to start over for the third time,” Staut said. “If that isn’t triumph over adversity I don’t know what is.”
