The rumble of motorcycles filled the air outside the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base theater May 12 as more than 150 bikers took off on the base’s annual Motorcycle Safety Day ride.
The goal of the safety day is to go beyond the required, preseason safety brief and to give Wright-Patt riders a chance to get together, build networks and find mentors.
“It’s a good way to get all the riders together. Get some of the riders across base who have seen and interacted with each other at the work place, but not realized they were fellow riders,” said Dennis Pearson, 88th Air Base Wing Safety Office safety specialist. “It’s a way to find a mentor and get some skills to hopefully survive the riding season.”
Between the morning briefs on different aspects of motorcycle safety and the ride, there was time for bikers to mingle, look over each other’s bikes and visit some vendors. A chaplain was available for a blessing of the bikes.
After the ride, food trucks were there to provide lunch, and the riders were able to visit with new friends—a chance to listen and tell stories of rides past or to give and receive advice. It was also, of course, a chance for everybody to think about safety.
“We’re out to learn about safety, so it was a good thing to remember,” said Senior Airman Jeannie Franks, a reservist with the 507th Force Support Squadron whose husband works for the Air Force Institute of Technology. “Sometimes we get comfortable, too confident, and then we forget the little details that are important to keep us safe.”
