NORFOLK, Va. -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians assigned to EOD Mobile Unit (EODMU) 12 visited students at the McDonald Montessori School as part of a community relations project in Norfolk, Va. May 12.

The visit was held by the school to help show students the non-traditional career opportunities available to them in the future.

“It’s great to be able to come here and really open their eyes to what’s out there when it comes to careers,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 2nd Class Sean Wall. “Even if they don’t decide to become an EOD tech, maybe we can pique their interest in other fields like science or robotics and that really makes it all worth it in the end. The students have been really engaged and enjoyed driving the robots and trying on the bomb suit.”

The Sailors spoke to the students about the basics of being an EOD technician, while answering questions about being in the Navy. The Sailors also brought equipment such as the EOD Mark 9 bomb suit, personal protective equipment, and several robots for the students to experiment with.

“It’s really inspiring to see what these Sailors do and you never know how this visit might affect these students,” said Ellen McDonald, owner and administrator of McDonald Montessori School. “We like to give children experiences because they then want to learn on their own. With everything they are learning and experiencing today, It’s possible that playing with the robots might inspire these children to want to study at MIT, work at NASA, or even join the Navy someday.”

“We’re extremely grateful for the Sailors to take time out of their day to visit and it's been an even cooler experience than expected. The children have had a great time and we hope we can host another group of Sailors again soon,” added McDonald.

EODMU 12 provides operational explosive ordnance disposal capability for the location, identification, rendering safe, recovery, field evaluation and disposal of all explosive ordnance, including chemical and nuclear weapons, and is headquartered at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek.
