FORT BENNING, Ga. – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) competitive shooting teams work daily to be the best marksmen in the world. Here is a review of their accomplishments for the week ending May 7.

    Competitions

    Service Rifle

Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), Service Rifle Team, competed in the 2017 Creedmor Cup in Butner, North Carolina, May 3-7.
The Creedmor Cup serves as the first big team match of the year for USAMU’s Service Rifle team as they gear up for the upcoming National and Interservice Championships.

The four-man Match Rifle team coached by Sgt. 1st Class William Pace from West Valley, Utah, easily took home the Championship by scoring 20 points more than the 2nd place team.

The winning team consisted of: Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Green from Covington, Louisiana; Sgt. 1st Class Evan Hess from Mount Pleasant, Texas; Sgt. Ben Cleland from Sylvania, Ohio; and Sgt. Joseph Peterson from Mobile, Alabama.

The team also fielded the best two squads in the four-man Service Rifle Championships. The 1st place team was led by Sgt. 1st Class Shane Barnhart from Columbus, Ohio, who coached Staff Sgt. David Bahten from Sonora, California; Staff Sgt. Amanda Elsenboss from Waterbury, Connecticut; Staff Sgt. Kevin Trickett from Boston, Massachusetts; and Sgt. Augustus Dunfey from Rumney, New Hampshire.

Second place went to the team coached by Sgt. 1st Class Robert Shoup from Dallas, Texas, who guided Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Crody from Auburn, Indiana; Spc. Verne Conant from Concord, Massachusetts; Spc. Lane Ichord from Modesto, California; and 2016 United States Olympian Spc. Daniel Lowe from Federal Way, Washington, to an impressive finish.

Individual excellence was on display as well as Pace took home the title in the Service Rifle category, while Elsenboss placed third.

Cleland won the overall Match Rifle Championship category and also shot a perfect score in the last match of the competition, the Excellence in Competition (EIC)/Match Director’s Match Rifle category. This led to a sweep of the podium by USAMU Soldiers as Green and Peterson finished second and third, respectively.

The perfect score achieved by Cleland is rare in match competition and an outstanding achievement, according to event organizers.

In the other EIC and Match Director’s Championships, USAMU Soldiers swept the Service Rifle category with Peterson, Lowe and Crody taking the first three positions. Lowe also earned 1st place in the Non-Distinguished category: his first points towards earning the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge.

    Action Shooting Team

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Horner from Suffolk, Virginia, took 1st place in the Practical Division Tactical Optics at the 2017 3-Gun Nation East Regional match held May 6-7 in Clinton, South Carolina. Horner was also first in overall competition.

Staff Sgt. Joel Turner from Anderson, South Carolina, finished fourth in the Unlimited Division Open category at the same event.

    Shotgun Team

The USAMU Shotgun Team performed a shotgun demonstration led by Olympians Sgt. 1st Class Glenn Eller from Houston, Texas, and Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Richmond from Sayre, Pennsylvania, at the 2017 Fort Benning Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Youth Sportsman Day on April 29.

Between them, Richmond and Eller have one Olympic Gold Medal and four World Championships in Double Trap. They showcase their marksmanship proficiency at many different venues throughout the year. However, the Benning MWR demonstration allowed the marksmen to reach out to the local community to help connect America’s People with America’s Army.

Shotgun team Soldiers also competed in the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup event in Larnaka, Cyprus, from April 30 to May 6.

The Men’s Skeet competition was held April 30-May 1 and required hitting a total of 122 clay targets out of 125 attempts to place in the top six and qualify for the finals.

Sgt. Mark Staffen from Westerville, Ohio, and Pfc. Christian Elliot from Richmond, Indiana, both shot 120 out of 125 targets, finishing in a 13th place tie out of 94 world class competitors. Sgt. Dustan Taylor from Shawnee, Oklahoma, finished 53rd in the event.

Staff Sgt. Derek Haldeman from Westerville, Ohio, competed in the Men’s Trap event held May 5-6. He finished in a tie for 47th place out of 128 world-class shooters, hitting 115 out 125 clay targets, missing qualifying for the finals by only five shots.
