Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Atlantic held a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand opening of a new center-wide resource called the Cyber Education & Certification Readiness Facility (CERF) in Charleston, South Carolina, April 25.

The CERF is open to SSC Atlantic government and military personnel at all sites. It provides fast-paced, hands-on, in-house training on cyber, networks, routing and operating systems for job enhancement and to prepare for various information technology (IT) certification exams. Instructors are experienced and certified, and use current vendor and in-house-developed curriculums and labs. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Instructor Wesley Jones helps teach the Networking class. “I find that helping others learn inherits growth and is challenging,” he said.

A vital component of SSC Atlantic’s strategy is to employ, develop and retain a credentialed workforce, building technical leadership. This facility provides the means to greatly increase the number of technically proficient and IT-certified personnel. “I wanted to expand my knowledge for future projects and broaden my experience,” said Kacey Hoing, an SSC Atlantic networking engineer assigned to SSC Atlantic’s National Capital Region Office. She attended the week-long class to learn more about networking and connecting the rack system.

“There are two things I really like about this new lab. First, that it will help SSC Atlantic build a more technically proficient and certified workforce. This lab allows hands-on, in-house training on networks and operating systems to help our government and military personnel prepare for IT certification exams like Cisco, Security+, CISSP, Red Hat, Microsoft, Juniper Networks and many more,” said Capt. Scott Heller, SSC Atlantic Commanding Officer. “Second, this lab was furnished with lots of re-used government equipment assembled together over more than a year of effort. We provided the desktops, carpeting, and the energy to create, so the lab itself represents a real super-saver as far as facilities go.”

In the past, employees attended external courses and often had to learn complex IT concepts via PowerPoint; however, this lab contains laptops and monitors, as well as racks of servers, routers, switches and cables for up to 12 students in Charleston at a time, so each person has direct, hands-on access to equipment needed throughout the course.

“It will also save money for students taking courses on-site as opposed to traveling and paying outside vendors,” said Heller. “Our folks can use the lab to prepare for IT certification exams with the help of SSC Atlantic instructors who are experienced and certified on vendor-developed curriculums. During unscheduled time, students can come here and use the equipment to reinforce concepts learned during formal training.”

Future plans call for video teleconference (VTC) broadcasts and remote site equipment access for SSC Atlantic employees outside Charleston.

A list of planned courses include:
    1. Cisco Certification
    2. Security+ Certification
    3. CISSP Certification
    4. Red Hat Certification

A leading-edge Navy engineering center, SSC Atlantic designs, builds, tests, fields and supports many of the finest frontline C4ISR systems in use today, and those being planned for the future.
