Law enforcement agencies from around Guam participated in a Guam Police Department sponsored shooting competition April 29, 2017, at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Guam.

Airmen from the 36th and 736th Security Forces Squadrons and law enforcement from the GPD, Guam Department of Corrections, Guam International Airport Authority Airport Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection competed in this friendly interagency Chief’s Cup event, which aimed to bring police forces together before National Police Week.

Gathering law enforcement from around the island for a competition aimed to develop ties and help each team work together in the future.

“It’s important that the relationship between law enforcement agencies is maintained, because I believe in an idea called ‘the whole of the community’,” said GPD Chief of Police Joseph Cruz. “That includes the military as well. I think that it’s important that we all collaborate and work together to serve the community.”

The competition consisted of male, female and best overall three-gun shooting categories followed by a team relay event. The events tested competitor’s precision, speed and safety when using a firearm.

“As law enforcement agents, police officers and military, this is our bread and butter,” said Tech. Sgt. Yerida Vazquez, 36th SFS NCO in charge of Combat Arms. “It’s what we need to be able to do. We’re using what brings home the bacon and turning it into a fun competition.”

In the individual rounds, contestants raced against the clock for the fastest time. Accuracy was important because any target missed added time to the shooter’s total. At the first stage, competitors fired rifles at a total of 10 targets in prone, kneeling, and standing unsupported positions. Following that, the contestants ran to the shotgun and pistol stages to shoot five and six targets respectively.

The team relay portion of the event consisted of four-person teams with each teammate assigned to tackle one of the events from the three-gun shooting course. The fourth member performed a one-handed shot with their pistol at a small target using their preferred stance.

Staff Sgt. Andrew Hosea, with the 736th SFS , won both best male and overall shooter categories and the 736th SFS earned first place in the team division.

“It’s always good to test yourself and work with your fellow law enforcement officers,” Hosea, a fire team leader, said. “[Airmen of the 736th SFS] don’t often work with outside agencies, so it is a valuable connection and community exercise when we get to work with them.”

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day which pays tribute to peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. The week that May 15 falls in is observed as National Police Week. Members of the 36th SFS and 736th SFS are scheduled to participate in upcoming Police Week events here which include an obstacle course, school visit, 5K and shooting competition.
