KABUL, Afghanistan — The Czech Republic-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Logar province launched several new development projects at a bidders' conference held, Sept. 7, 2008 at Forward Operating Base Shank.

The projects include the construction of several girls' schools, the construction of a training center for Afghan national police and the retrofitting of all main check points on the highway from Kabul to Gardez, the most frequented highway in Logar.

"The Hassani Basri Girls' Primary School was established 16 years ago in Khushi," said Abdul Qayom, director of education in Khushi, "but the girls have not had their own school yet; they are attending classes in private homes."

The PRT will build two primary schools in Khushi District. When they are completed, all girls from the central villages in Khushi will be able to attend.

Development of a stable and secure environment through the Afghan national police is one of the priorities of the Czech PRT. Better and more robust buildings as well as protection walls will help the ANP to provide security along the highway. The training center the PRT is building for the ANP will facilitate the training of up to 500 Afghan police annually.

The Czechs will choose the Afghan companies that will undertake the reconstruction and the work will start within the next month. Other projects include the building of the Baraki Barak District Center security wall and the construction of a surface water level measuring point to gather data about water quantities.

Reconstruction of six schools, construction of two comprehensive health clinics and five cold storages are among other ongoing projects of the Czech PRT, to help further the future and stability of the people of Afghanistan.
