    1st Mission Support Command

    FORT BUCHANAN, PR – Miami Recruiting Battalion’s Recruiting Reserve Partnership Council brought Army recruiters and Army Reserve command teams together on Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, May 6.

    Miami Recruiting Battalion serves approximately 84 Army Reserve units with vacancies in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The whole purpose of this Reserve Recruiters Partnership Council is for us to have better communication with each other,” said battalion commander Lt. Col. Harold E. Miller. “I have a mission to recruit America’s best and brightest for the Reserve side and active component. If we are in consistent communication with our TPU partners, and we recruit those applicants, it’s a smooth, seamless process. These events that we do, enhance that capability.”

    The ultimate goal of the Recruiting Reserve Partnership Council (RPC) is to build and sustain unit personnel strength by strengthening relationships between commanders and recruiters.

    “Today, I want to have clear, frank and open discussions,” said Brig. Gen. Alberto C. Rosende, commanding general for the 1st Mission Support Command. “We have to be able to bring up issues and discuss them. What I would love to see is everyone clear out of this room, and everyone is at a desk, going into the system and identifying the issues so we can fix things today.”

    Rosende emphasized how important it is for Soldiers to be treated as a valued part of a team after they have enlisted and are showing up to a unit for the first time. “When a Soldier and their family walk into any Reserve center for the first time, or meet with a recruiter for the first time, we want to make sure that that Soldier gets the understanding that they are going to be a future leader and a valued member of the team and we need them,” said Rosende.

    “This is all about partnership; everybody is here to do a job and we are all contributing to the success of the mission,” continued Rosende. “Our mission is to ensure that the Army Reserve is ready for the nation’s call. That means getting Soldiers in, processing Soldiers at the RPACs, making them feel welcome and part of a team and ensuring they are ready. As recruiters, you really looking out for the future of our organization.”

    In addition to recruiters from the Miami Recruiting Battalion, Army Reserve Career Division (ARCD) counselors were also present. Their goal is to retain Soldiers that are currently serving and bring Soldiers that are currently in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) back into an active Reserve status.

    During the day, the command teams were given the opportunity to have breakout sessions and discuss their unit needs with the recruiters. As the council continues to works together to address recruiting issues and synchronize recruiting efforts for the Army Reserve, the outcome should be very beneficial for all Army Reserve Units.

    “The expectation for this RPC is to bring the recruiters and the retention folks in to gather with the units and help identify their vacancy list and fill their vacancies,” said Lt. Col. William Claybrooks, commander 5th Battalion ARCD. “We do a great job with partnering with the units in Puerto Rico so we can help meet their needs. Besides re-enlisting Soldiers and bringing IRR Soldiers back into the Army Reserve formations, we also recruit candidates for the Warrant Officer program and Officer Candidate School.”

    “During our breakout sessions, we are able to go line by line and slot by slot to figure out what Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) each unit needs,” said Miller. “We establish a baseline here, but the most important part is to follow up. What we are doing here is critical and it all goes back to recruiting the very best to join the United States Army.”
