BETHESDA, Maryland - Navy Medicine Professional Development Center (NMPDC) headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, announced today that it is the 2016 recipient of the Navy-wide USS Bainbridge Award for overall excellence in community service.
The USS Bainbridge award is a part of the Navy Community Service Program (NCSP) that encourages Sailors to make a positive impact on the communities in which they live and work.
"Winning the Bainbridge Award is a true honor and testament to the heart and strong character of the staff of Navy Medicine Professional Development Center,” said Capt. Jeff Andrews, NMPDC Commanding Officer. “I am privileged to serve with others who are selfless and understand the importance of community outreach and the impact of helping others. Our staff can be proud of their remarkable volunteerism and the positive influence their efforts made on the lives of over 80,000 youth in the community."
The goal of the NMPDC community relation program is to demonstrate personal excellence by encouraging local youth to reach their fullest potential through education and civic responsibility.
Andrews praised the efforts of Hospital Corpsman Second Class Ian Polage and Hospital Corpsman Second Class David Kligar, NMPDC’s Community Service Volunteer Program coordinators. Their efforts directly supported the NMPDC community relations program mission and provided a tremendous impact toward the command receiving the award.
They coordinated volunteer efforts of 544 military and civilian personnel for 32 events that contributed services to 851,065 people in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
There are six categories for the NCSP awards: USS Bainbridge Award for Overall Excellence in Community Service, Personal Excellence Partnership Flagship Award winners for Community Service, Project Good Neighbor Flagship Award winners for Community Service, Environment Stewardship Flagship Awards winners for Navy Community Service, Health, Safety and Fitness Flagship Winner for Navy Community Service and Campaign Drug Free Awards for Community Service.
NMPDC previously won in three of the categories in the Naval District Washington completion: USS Bainbridge Award for Overall Excellence, Navy-wide award and Personal Excellence Partnership flagship award Winner for Community Service, and Heath, Safety and Fitness Flagship award for Community Service, both for the medium shore size command. This win allowed NMPDC to move onto the all-Navy competition.
