Promotions for 24th MEU on board USS Carter Hall

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY

    05.01.2017

Story by Chief Petty Officer Anastasia McCarroll

    USS Bataan (LHD 5)

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS – Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit received promotions, during a promotion ceremony on the flight deck aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), May 1.

Nine Marines were promoted while underway on USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) to the non-commission officer (NCO) ranks of sergeant and corporal.

The Marines who received promotions were Sgt. Jermaine P. Brooks, Jr., Sgt. William T. Chavarria, Sgt. Ishmael A. Clayton, Sgt. Oscar S. Reddick, Sgt. Jacob D. Van Hyning, Cpl. Zack D. Beales, Cpl. Robert W. Cullerton, Cpl. Benjamin P. McCullough and Cpl. Chandler S. Swieczkowski

“The NCO ranks are the backbone of the Marine Corps,” said 1st Sgt. Carl J. Jacobsen. “In order to ensure that we are promoting the best and most qualified individuals, it is incumbent upon our commanders and senior enlisted Marines to properly screen Marines for leadership, maturity and professionalism.”

Jacobsen said promotions constitute an expectation of future performance from the selected Marines.

“The promotion of enlisted Marines must positively contribute to the high standards of leadership and proficiency required for continued combat readiness in the Marine Corps,” said Jacobsen, from Mandeville, La.

Clayton said he became somewhat emotional during his pinning.

“I don’t know why; maybe because of all the hard work and effort that I put into my job and leading Marines,” said Clayton, from Jacksonville, Fla. “I actually do care a lot about Marines and protecting my country.”

Beales, from Chesterfield, Va., said he was proud of becoming an NCO and credited having a good group of sergeants who have set good leadership examples.

“It’s a blessing,” Beales said. “You have to step up, be a leader; show them that you’re ready and that you’ve earned it.”

Carter Hall, part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
