SEOUL, Republic of Korea (May 4, 2017) --Representatives from the United Nations Command (UNC) Sending States and the Naval Component Command (NCC) conducted the first ever UNC NCC Symposium, May 4.

The symposium brought together more than 22 maritime experts across the UNC Sending State navies to identify maritime challenges in the region and the means to overcome the challenges as a multinational naval force.

During his opening remarks, Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of UNC NCC, stated his vision and remarked on the importance of the symposium.

“Our vision is to develop an effective, interoperable, and relevant naval force,” Cooper said, “and with your help and our continued cooperation we will continue to support the UNC in carrying out the terms of the Armistice."

“That is why I am excited to see this level of participation today,” Cooper continued, “because success is found in teamwork and your participation is a clear signal of the strength of the NCC.”

Throughout the one-day symposium, representatives discussed current initiatives and future development, training opportunities, and the further development of multinational mine warfare countermeasure initiatives including the exercise Clear Horizon.

Royal Canadian Navy Capt. James Cotter expressed his appreciation for the symposium and believes it will only strengthen the naval component.

“This symposium helps all of us understand the naval side of supporting UNC,” said Cotter, “and while this is the first step of many it does allow the Sending States to become better aware of the naval expectations in the Korean area of operations.”

The mission of the UNC Naval Component Command is to carry out the terms of the Armistice Agreement of July 27, 1953 in order to preserve peace in the waters surrounding the Korean peninsula while being prepared to provide operational control for UNC Sending States naval forces assigned to UNC
    should the armistice fail.

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea is dual-hatted as the UNC Naval Component Command during Armistice. The U.S. and UNC Sending States navies plan, exchange information, train and operate together to strengthen coordination and improve combined capabilities in and around the Republic of Korea.
