FORT STEWART GA. – Pfc. Asia Johnson, culinary specialist with Echo Company, 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, stirs up a victory in competition for Cook of the Quarter Apr. 6 at Fort Stewart, Ga.
Participants of the 2nd quarter division-level competition were assessed on how well they performed during a board, preparation of new dishes and overall presentation of products.
Johnson excelled in each event and won the cooking portion with caribbean rice, maple crusted chicken breast and lemon infused asparagus. For dessert, she prepared a cupcake stickball carrot cake with vanilla icing, caramel and walnuts garnished with carrot shavings.
She said, “It was an honor to represent 2nd IBCT during the competition. Regardless of whether you win or not, you can take what you learn back to the dining facility and teach your team.”
Sgt. Tamiko Johnes, one of Johnson’s shift leaders at the Spartan Brigade dining facility, stated that Johnson has always been a prompt and professional Soldier, she has a take charge attitude, and never turns down a challenge
Johnson said that she believes that it’s important to ensure that every meal she makes is perfect.
“When I was a child, my mom use to work often, and I would have to babysit and learn how to cook. My mother and daughter are who inspired me to pursue a profession in culinary arts.”
She said the main ingredient she took away from participating in the division Cook of the Quarter competition was humility.
“I feel that even though I won this competition, I know there is still more out there to learn, and I just want to be the best chef that I can be.”
