Members from the 212th Combat Support Hospital, from Kaiserslautern, Germany, held an open house at their field hospital established to support Saber Junction 17 in Hohenfels, Germany May 1.

The unit worked with local partners, including members of the Bavarian Red Cross and first responders from German civilian organizations, to demonstrate their capabilities.

“We’re just thrilled we’ve had excellent support from all of the Hohenfels team,” said Col. Brian Almquist, commander of the 212th CSH. “We’ve had excellent response from our German partners to come out and visit during the open house.”

The CSH will be here for the entire exercise, enabling local German emergency responders to see exactly the type of operations a U.S. Army CSH can conduct in a crisis. It provides both surgical and specialty care; anything from emergency trauma resuscitation and life saving surgery to behavioral health and OBGYN.

The unit also has full anesthesia, live blood and pharmacy capabilities, and can be deployed in a combat or garrison environment.

This exercise gives the soldiers an opportunity to really refine their techniques and to make sure they can provide world class care if a solider needs help, said Almquist.

Patients treated here go through a series of “roles”, each providing a specific level of care designated by the severity of the patient’s injuries.

The hospital provides unprecedented ability at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center for medical and operational forces to train together to practice realistic medical training.

This is the first CSH to be setup at a Saber Junction event since approximately 2009 and will remain here for the duration of the training event.
