Larger Than Life Fitness Center and Titan Dining Facility open their doors

    INCIRLIK AIR BASE, 1, TURKEY

The new locations were opened to help accommodate the quality of life for the growing populace at Incirlik.
“Years ago, there wasn’t a need for more than one base gym and one DFAC,” said Senior Master Sgt. Bradford Harewood, 39th Force Suppport Squadron Sustainment Services Flight superintendent. “Due to the rise in operations, the Sultan’s Inn DFAC had to adjust to keep up with the amount of people it is currently feeding. Two smaller DFACs were opened over the years to help accommodate the amount of people using the facilities.”
The three DFACs on base currently serve more meals than the rest of the bases in U.S. Air Forces in Europe combined. While the facilities feed a large amount of people, the operational hours across all three facilities left times where Airmen would not be able to dine.
“The goal for the Titan DFAC was to provide dining during the times the other facilities could not handle,” said Harewood. “Between preparation, serving and cleaning, the facilities were at their maximum operation times.”
The new facility was designed to allow Airmen an opportunity to dine 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday.
The Larger Than Life Fitness Center and Titan DFAC were unofficially opened April 17, 2017, and have been open since, allowing Airmen to use them.
“The hours at the new DFAC are a lot better for me,” said Senior Airman Robert Phillips, 39th Security Forces Squadron Pass and Registration clerk. “It’s open during work days, so it allows me to eat breakfast more regularly.”
Like the Titan DFAC’s role, the Larger than Life Fitness Center was opened to alleviate the over usage during daily operation.
During the peak hours, 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the main gym was showing larger amounts of wear and tear.
“By the time the peak hours would end, we could see the aftermath of what happened to the gym equipment,” said Harewood. “When we got halfway through repairing a broken piece of equipment, something else would break.”
The new facility was put in place to reduce the amount of people going in and out of the main base fitness center.
The Larger Than Life Fitness Center features both new and used equipment that is identical to the main facility.
During the soft opening, the new facility saw more use as the amount of users declined in the main gym.
“The headcounts during the peak hours at the base fitness center have dropped between 25 to 50 percent during the peak hours when the new Larger Than Life Fitness Center is open,” said Daniel Giannavola, 39th FSS Sustainment Services flight chief.
Both facilities have just opened and have shown early signs of success for what they were intended.
“The facilities have already done what I wanted them to do,” said Harewood. “They are already going the direction they were supposed to go.”
