Service members and families aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii participated in the annual “Strike Out Child Abuse” bowling event at K-Bay Lanes on April 26, 2017.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and reach out to the base community about ways to protect children from abuse.
“Our first priority is to prevent domestic and child abuse,” said Deborah Wagner, the family advocacy program manager with Marine Corps Community Services-Hawaii. “Our second is to provide treatment in those situations but if we can prevent it from happening in a family then we’re good.”
Randall Cayco, the MCCS Program Lead, said that the significance between the child abuse and the bowling event was that bowling is a pastime that a lot of military members and their families participate in.
“It’s a chance for all the other resources to reach out to the families,” Cayco said. “When you strike out, that’s all the pins down. That has to do with at least trying to get rid of child abuse.”
Wagner said that it’s important for parents to do something that is positive for their kids.
“We wanted something easily accessible for parents and children of all ages,” Wagner said. “The families might even take away from the different resources provided to them, such as parenting and counseling classes,” Wagner said.
Heidi York, the Prevention Intervention Education Specialist with Behavioral Health, said that anyone, whether military or not, can participate in these events.
“I feel like it’s important that families are given the opportunity to have fun together,” York said. “When I was [a part of] a young family at one time, I didn’t know all of the resources or anyone on base. I believe this is a great way to meet people that might not come in contact.”
April is national child abuse prevention month. For more information on child abuse prevention, go to http://americanspcc.org/ .
