Marines from 2nd Marine Logistics Group went through their annual Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear training on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 26.

The Marines trained in mission-oriented protective posture gear to build confidence and increase survivability and operational success in a CBRN environment.

The training emphasized how to operate the M50 Joint Service General Purpose gas masks and wear MOPP gear designed to block chemical and biological warfare agents from reaching the body.

“This class is significant because it prepares us for whatever we could encounter overseas,” said Lance Cpl. Blake Wise, a ground radio repairman with Headquarters Regiment, 2nd MLG. “The more prepared you are, the better you can react to the unexpected.”

While in the gas chamber, the Marines were exposed to chlorobenzylidene malononitrile, also known as CS gas, a powerful form of tear gas which causes skin irritation, breathing difficulty and a burning effect in the eyes.

The Marines conducted a series of exercises inside the chamber to ensure their masks fit properly. They also broke the seal allowing the CS gas under the mask before don and clearing their masks.

“There is a big emphasis on CBRN training,” said Lance Cpl. Kelsey Nelson a CBRN instructor at the Headquarters Regiment, 2nd MLG. “The training definitely helps us to be ready.”

With the Marine Corps being America’s force in readiness, the knowledge of CBRN attacks and prevention is critical for success on the battlefield.
