The SLS was an executive level component of the exercise and included discussions to promote regional stability.
The SLS kicked off with opening remarks by Division General Belkhir El Farouk, Commandant, Southern Zone Headquarters. After he welcomed everyone in attendance, he gave an overview of the day’s schedule with emphasis on how the seminar would be run.
Key topics of discussion included how to degrade violent extremist organizations (VEO) in the region, how to contain instability in Libya, and how to build humanitarian assistance/disaster response capacity of African partner nations.
The three themes for SLS consisted of military considerations to border security and how to mitigate air and maritime threats, regional strategies to counter VEOs, and cyber security and defense.
Discussions on each theme were divided into two-hour blocks. Each block started with two panelists who gave presentations on the current situation in the region and the proposed ideas on how to mitigate known and future threats. After the panelists concluded their presentations, the floor was open to questions.
At the conclusion of the seminar the participating nations departed with the task of creating after-action reports. These reports will include their proposed solutions to tackle the threats they face in the region and will require continued coordination between North American, European and African nations to formulate a plan with a way forward.
The participating nations included: Morocco, United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Niger, Senegal, Spain, and Tunisia.
