FT JACKSON, S.C. - The Naval Chaplaincy School and Center (NCSC) has joined forces with Fort Jackson’s Adopt-a-School program reaching out to the local community in Columbia, South Carolina.

Since February, many instructors from the NCSC schoolhouse have spent personal time volunteering at Alcorn Middle School’s Afterschool program, providing assistance in reading, writing, and math.

Intermediate Leadership Course Instructor Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Weems volunteers every Wednesday assisting students with pre-algebra assignments.

"The staff at Alcorn Middle School has been extremely receptive and helpful to connect us to students who need help,” said Weems. “This partnership is important for the student to be able to see that there are more than those in their immediate circles who care and want to see them succeed."

Cmdr. John Anderson, a course supervisor at NCSC also volunteers with the Afterschool program.

“The response from students, teachers, and administrators has been overwhelmingly positive. They all know that we're there participating in the Afterschool program because we care about the students, we care about their education, and we care about their future,” said Anderson.

Not only do the students at Alcorn Middle School show their appreciation for the added help, the Afterschool teachers appreciate the extra assistance from the NCSC instructors. Alcorn Middle Afterschool Lead Teacher Raquel Dobbs said she hopes the Chaplaincy School will continue to serve the students.
“We appreciate all that they do to help our kids be successful,” said Dobbs.

Gunnery Sgt. Johnathan Mogollon serves as the NCSC volunteer liaison. He challenges his command to engage their leadership and teaching skills to have a long-lasting impact and foster good relationships with the local community.

“I wanted the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life, through coaching, mentoring and just being there for the kids at Alcorn Middle School,” said Mogollon. “I recommended the command choose this school, because we have a great team that can really make a difference.”

James W. Bryant, Alcorn Middle’s parent community involvement coordinator, ensures the volunteers are fully integrated with the students and faculty.

“We are so grateful for what the tutors are doing for our students here at Alcorn,” said Bryant.

The volunteers take a break over the summer months and will continue when school starts back next school year.

“It's rewarding enough to serve as instructors at NCSC, to be able to use our gifts and abilities to serve these students is an absolute joy.” said Anderson.

The mission of the Adopt-a-School program is to routinely contribute military resources and services to schools in order to nurture the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth of children.
