PORT HUENEME, Calif.—Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD), held a class on performance management best practices for new supervisors, April 19-20. The two-day comprehensive training provided valuable instruction designed to enable managers to better support their employees, assist them in achieving their goals and provide the coaching needed to excel and thrive in their positions.

Dr. Maggie Sizer, CEO and president of On Track Coaching LLC, presented the material in a high-energy, captivating style, often injecting humor, which kept the audience engaged. Supervisors in attendance participated in icebreakers and group exercises that gave them an opportunity to meet others in their community and also to network and share experience and insight.

Dr. Sizer emphasized the significant principles of effectively managing employees, including explaining how their job directly impacts the mission of Port Hueneme Division (PHD). “When an employee recognizes their contribution to the fleet, they will subsequently feel more pride and satisfaction in their job,” said Sizer.

The Performance Management class is one in a series of five courses offered to management at the command as part of their supervisory development plan. Anabell Ramos, PHD Workforce Development director, coordinated the training, leveraging an existing Warfare Center contract, which reduces costs to the other Warfare Center divisions.

“Not only was the course found to be relevant and beneficial to Warfare Center managers, but the use of the existing contract vehicle is a great example of ‘high velocity learning’ for the enterprise,” said Ramos. “Also, utilizing a common training plan creates a new consistency within the Warfare Centers that will benefit employees as they transfer within the organization.”

NSWC PHD Technical Director Dr. Bill Luebke has long realized the value of providing senior leaders with ongoing support and training, acknowledging the top-down benefit of effective leadership and the impact on the command. His Eight to Exceptionalism (E2E) initiative reminds management of the essential principles for success and these courses are an instrumental part of this program.

“I believe this new training will be a great benefit to the PHD management team,” said Luebke. “It will be new to some and a refresher for others, but it will provide a great return on investment when our leaders have completed this series and can take their insights back to the job and begin the good work of guiding, coaching and mentoring their employees for mutual success.”

Supervisors in attendance remarked about the benefits of the class after day one, acknowledging the value of understanding an employee’s contribution to the mission and working together with their employees in the development of their Individual Development Plans and career goals.

The next course in the series, Successful Senior Leadership in Government, will be offered on-site, May 9-10.
