ORZYSZ, Poland - Commander of U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, addressed NATO service members during a welcome ceremony for enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battle Group Poland at Land Forces Field Training Center here April 13, 2017.
General Scaparrotti spoke about the importance of the eFP mission to the hundreds of soldiers from multinational forces that took part in the ceremony.
“Deploying these troops to Poland is a clear demonstration of NATO’s unity and resolve and sends a clear message to any potential aggressor,” said Scaparrotti. “Having multinational allies working together to create an enhanced forward presence is a visible demonstration of the Alliance’s commitment to Article 5 -- an attack against one is an attack against all.”
Battle Group Poland is comprised of soldiers from the United States, United Kingdom, and Romania that are integrated with the Polish Army's 15th Mechanized Brigade located in the town of Orzysz.
“It’s the largest and most significant deployment in NATO since the Cold War,” said Gen. Scaparrotti. “It represents the outcome of the decisions made at the Warsaw Summit. It represents the commitment and the resolve of NATO to protect the sovereignty of the Trans-Atlantic Theater. It’s a significant event.”
Army Sgt. First Class Rob Petry, a platoon Sgt. for 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment (2/2CR), believes the commander’s visit did more than just inaugurate eFP in Poland; it also stressed the importance of the mission to the soldiers on the ground.
“The fact that General Scaparrotti made time to come here and talk to the troops is important for morale,” said Petry. “It shows the soldiers how big of a deal this really is, and that they’re a part of something that is a lot bigger than themselves.”
Following the ceremony, the commander met with representatives from 2/2CR, which consists of about 1,000 soldiers and is the United States’ framework unit to the eFP initiative in Poland.
“It’s great to see our magnificent soldiers here today from all of the nations and what they represent for the defense of Europe,” said Gen. Scaparrotti. “They, and the other nations, represent NATO and its commitment to deterrence and defense here in Europe, and that’s an important service.”
