GLENDALE, Ariz – The Veterans Heritage Project (VHP) held its annual Community Reception and Book Signing event, April 9, Arizona State University, West Campus, Glendale, Ariz.

The VHP connects high school students with veterans in the local community, allowing the students to learn about their experiences as part of the military and service to the nation.

The veterans range from conflicts dating back to World War II, up until the wars on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The students, 8th through 12th graders, interview the veterans and document their stories for an annual hardcover book, titled ‘Since You Asked.’

During the reception veterans from the Phoenix area were honored and signed copies of their various sections in Phoenix Edition 1, the 13th volume of the series.

Participating in this volume was Lt. Col. Dave Clukey, commander, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, who said being able to document his wartime experiences in Afghanistan was a valuable exercise.

“I think this is a great initiative and I was honored when (VHP) reached out to interview me and include me in their most recent publication,” Clukey said. “The project is consistent with my intent as an Army recruiting commander to better connect the Army with local communities and educate them about the Army and service opportunities in the Army.”

“I think it's very important that our youth understand the sacrifices made for our freedoms and appreciate our rich military history,” he said.

The VHP website states the projects non-profit’s primary purpose is to qualify new schools and select, train, and mentor VHP teacher-advisers; then coordinate, manage, and ensure the quality of the program that will connect new students with military veterans in their communities. VHP provides hands-on learning and to develop students’ appreciation for an America they will one day lead.
