Indianapolis, Ind. - Six National Guard Agribusiness Development Teams were honored April 8 in a formal ceremony at the Indiana World War Memorial where the teams received their own exhibit honoring the units developmental work in Afghanistan from 2009-2014.
Each ADT unit had 12-15 National Guardsmen selected for their experience and/or education, regardless of their rank or military specialty. The exhibit is now a permanent feature of the museum.
"I can testify the ADTs went at the mission with verve, grit, intelligence and respect for the Afghans," said Douglas A. Wissing, a journalist who was embedded with the 19th ADT.
The mission's primary purpose was to engage Afghan leaders. Indiana ADTs worked to improve the quality of life for local farmers, expand academics and enhance the competency of government officials. The ADT goals were not only to help rebuild local agribusiness but also to win the hearts and minds of the local residents.
"Today is the culmination of three and a half years of planning," said retired Brig. Gen. Brian Copes, the commander of the first 19th ADT mission.
The first meeting for the exhibit was held in October 2013. Each of the six teams had a representative to ensure everyone had a voice in the project's production.
The ceremony was attended by Soldiers from the units, their families, and Indiana National Guard leaders to acknowledge the development teams' commitments and sacrifices.
"Many hearts and hands were involved with this project," said retired Brig. Gen. J. Stewart Goodwin.
