NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain (April 7, 2017) Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1 complete a 48-hour Air Detachment (Air Det) deployment mobilization exercise in Santa Rita, Guam, March 28, 2017.
The exercise tested the battalion’s ability to deploy an 89-man Air Det with 20 pieces of construction equipment and 10 pallets that would be shipped by air. The Air Det deploys upon notification of a request for support during an event to provide a quick response force in the region for major contingencies that may arise.
“This exercise has increased my confidence in the battalion,” said Equipment Operator 1st Class James Yokley, NMCB 1’s Air Det embark leading petty officer. “If we are ever called upon to provide recovery assistance to whoever may need it, now we know can get out there and do what needs to be done.”
While the exercise built the confidence of the leadership, it also provided an opportunity to teach younger Sailors how to effectively execute a rapid response mission.
“It was a fast paced exercise with a lot of moving parts,” said Equipment Operator 3rd Class Danielle Carter. “It is always great getting to learn new things. The exercise as a whole was interesting, also tiring, but a great learning experience. Being able to work with my fellow Seabees is always great.”
NMCB 1 is forward deployed to execute construction, humanitarian and foreign assistance, special operations combat service support, and theater security cooperation in support of U.S. Pacific Command.
