    Story by Sgt. Tiffany Edwards

    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

ABOARD USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6), At Sea, Pacific Ocean – Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (Reinforced), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, won the 2017 Pete Ross Award for aviation safety by the Marine Corps Aviation Association. Marine Administrative Message 144/17 announced the winners in the MCAA’s 29 competitive categories March 22, 2017.
The Pete Ross Award is given to the Marine Aviation Unit compiling the best safety record over the past year, according to Maj. Joel Lomasney, operations officer for VMM-262 (Rein.). Résumés of units throughout the fleet, both active duty and reserve, are reviewed and scrutinized in a competitive board selection process. Each category is highly competitive, indicating exceptional leadership and dedication to mission accomplishment for all nominees.
“VMM-262 (Rein.) successfully balanced a high operational tempo with a relentless focus on personal and unit operational risk management,” Lomasney said. “Dedication to standardization, risk mitigation and safety was maintained throughout the squadron and emphasized at all levels of leadership.”
During the award period, VMM-262 (Rein.) met or exceeded unit and individual aircrew flight hour goals, with an annual flight hour goal of over 2,400 MV-22B Osprey flight hours for fiscal year 2016, and an average of more than 16.2 flight hours per month for all aircrew. The unit met all training goals, executed tasking in support of III MEF operations, and consistently maintained aircraft readiness goals.
“The significance of achieving the Pete Ross award shows that unit safety and operational excellence are mutually supporting efforts,” Lomasney said. “The Marines and Sailors of VMM-262 (Rein.) are proud to be recognized for their untiring efforts in fostering a culture of safety within the context of combat readiness.”
The 31st MEU Marine Air-Ground Task Force is a flexible force that has long provided the United States a broad spectrum of response options when U.S. and allied interests are threatened and in non-combat situations that require instant crisis response. Selective, timely and credible commitment to safety and risk management of air-ground units maintains the 31st MEU’s forward-deployed capability as America’s contingency force in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Award winners will be recognized at the 46th annual MCAA Symposium and awards dinner held in La Jolla, Calif. May 16-20, 2017. For more information, see the MARADMIN.
