Georgia Army National Guard Soldiers of the 122nd Tactical Support Detachment were officially welcomed to the 7th Infantry Division, Task Force Bayonet, during a patch changing ceremony at the Clay National Guard Center, Marietta, Ga. April 1, 2017.

“This is a great day for the 7th Infantry Division, the 78th Troop Command and the 122nd TSD,” said Brig. Gen. Tom Blackstock, commander of the 78th Troop Command. “This is an opportunity for us to continue to integrate the capability of the National Guard into multi component units. It is great for the Soldiers and very beneficial to the 7th Infantry Division to get this kind of support.”

During the patch change ceremony, the Soldiers of the 122nd TSD received the distinctive hourglass patch of the 7th Infantry Division signifying the connection between the units. It is a connection 100 years in the making.

The 122nd TSD was originally constituted in the Georgia National Guard as the Field Hospital Number 1 in 1914. Following service on the Mexican border in 1916 and 1917, the unit was sent to Camp Wheeler in Macon, Ga. to prepare for World War I mobilization. The 7th Infantry Division was organized at Camp Wheeler December 6, 1917, and for the next several months, the forerunners of the 7th Infantry Division and 122nd TDS trained on the same ground.

One hundred years later, the 122nd TSD supplements the staff of the 7th Infantry Division during NTC rotations. The 122nd TSD has completed two National Training Center rotations with the 7th ID and Col. Alan Alexander, commander of the 122nd TSD, is currently preparing for a third.

“Our next exercise will be at Joint Base Lewis McChord where we will integrate with the 7th ID staff to run an exercise featuring one of their brigades,” said Alexander. “It is a tremendous opportunity for our Guardsmen to not only wear the patch of a historic division that has proved its worth over numerous conflicts, but to operate at the division staff level. Not may units have that opportunity.”

Lieutenant Col. Frederick Williams, representing the 7th Infantry Division at the patch changing ceremony, noted the arrangement between the 7th Infantry Division and 122nd TSD is mutually beneficial.

“We are proud to have you as part of the 7th Division, said Williams. “As Citizen Soldiers, you bring a lot of skills and experience to the table and we look forward to exchanging ideas and learning from you in the future.”
